It’s not to protect from roll-overs, the roll bar/airbox does that just fine. It’s supposedly to protect from flying debris. Although it’s pretty useless for anything smaller than a tire.

But it’s not *actually* F3. The car below is the most recent FIA Formula 3 spec.

Anyways it’s bullshit that they’re making yet another spec junior formula series. There are way too many of them. Every engine and chassis manufacturer wants their own, but it divides fields and waters down an already small and very finite market.

I don’t think it matters that it isn’t the same car. It is the FIA blessing that matters. I think the new F4 car bridges the entry-level, carbon fiber tub car gap that has been missing in North America (and that SCCA dropped the ball on with the FE a decade or so ago), and with the new F3 car being an uprated version of the F4 car, that familiarity might help transition some native talent up the ladder. F3 winners will get points toward an FIA super license and a real shot at F2, and I think that will be the real series draw.

Given that the FIA has been pretty consistent for a couple of years now with how they wanted Junior Formula series to feed into a global pipeline, I’ve been amazed that  Mazda Road to Indy didn’t snatch that affiliation up. Given the general timing of the new pro Mazda cars, new Indy lights cars and the new F2 cars in the pipeline, it seems like they could’ve made that work if they wanted to and vastly increased their appeal in the process.

I agree that there are a lot of series out there right now, and certainly not all of them are going to make it. I feel like stodgy old SCCA might have actually picked a winning horse(for once) on the FIA affiliated North American F3 and F4. They certainly seem to have done well by largely adopting GT4/GT3 for World Challenge. l think a real shot at the FIA super license dream can draw some young talent and money in.
